# Hide conversations, delete history and block users

> Understand what each conversation control changes and what remains with the other participant or a report.

Open the conversation-options menu in the main Messages interface. Choose the action matching your intent; hiding, deleting and blocking have different effects.

## Compare the controls

| Action | Result |
| - | - |
| Close or minimize chat | Changes the open chat interface; does not erase history or block anyone |
| Hide conversation | Hides it from your normal list; history remains |
| Delete conversation | Removes your retained history through the confirmed point |
| Delete your message | Replaces that message's ordinary display with a deleted placeholder |
| Block user | Prevents sending between the affected pair while a block applies |
| Report | Sends eligible evidence for moderation review; does not itself block the account |

The public Biolink chat has no conversation-options header menu. Its received-message reporting action is separate from the full inbox controls.

## Hide versus delete

A later message can make a hidden conversation visible again. Hiding is therefore not a substitute for blocking.

Deleting conversation history applies to your side. The other participant can retain their copy. Messages arriving after the deletion point are not meant to be removed by that earlier deletion action.

When neither participant retains a message range, normal content and recording cleanup can remove those unretained copies. Cleanup is not a promise that every related identifier, legally retained record or independently captured report disappears immediately.

## Block and unblock

1. Open the conversation options.
2. Choose **Block user** and follow any confirmation.
3. Check the composer reflects that sending is unavailable.
4. Use **Unblock user** when you want to remove your block.

Your unblock does not remove a block set by the other participant. Blocks also affect eligibility for unread-message reminders. Do not expect account suspension or a moderation restriction to disappear because you unblocked someone.

## Reports and deletion

Reported messages, limited surrounding context and recordings can be preserved separately for review. Deleting the original message or both participants' chat history does not erase captured report evidence.

Evidence content is retained while a report is open and for 90 days after review or unreviewed closure, then becomes subject to cleanup. Unresolved reports expire after 90 days unless an administrator records an extension. Limited moderation history is retained for 12 calendar months after closure or the end of the associated restriction or suspension, whichever is later. Minimal active-suspension records and documented legal holds have separate review-based exceptions. See [Reporting and moderation](https://learn.biq.li/help/messaging/reporting.md); do not interpret the evidence period as a promise that every report record is deleted.
