# Understand unread-message email notifications

> Learn when reminders are eligible, how the delay and cooldown work and where email links lead.

Unread-message emails help you return to conversations you have not read. They apply to eligible regular and Biolink messages, including existing conversations.

## Timing

* A newly eligible unread message becomes due after **10 minutes**.
* A conversation has a **two-hour email cooldown for that recipient**.
* Several pending unread messages in the same conversation can be grouped into one email.
* Messages already included in a successful reminder are not repeatedly emailed without newer eligible unread messages.

The cooldown is per conversation, not a single account-wide cap across every sender. Different conversations can produce separate emails.

These are eligibility times, not an exact delivery guarantee. Background processing, activity checks, the cooldown and email transport can delay arrival. After an attempted delivery fails, retry can also wait through the cooldown to avoid duplicate-mail storms.

## Conditions checked before sending

The recipient must have an eligible verified email address and the direct-message email preference enabled. The pending messages must still be unread and visible.

Hidden conversations, blocks in either direction, unavailable accounts and messages no longer eligible for notification can suppress delivery. Reading the messages before delivery removes that unread reason to send.

A recipient with recent active presence is deferred and checked again. Keeping a dashboard tab open does not guarantee continuous active presence: browsers can suspend background tabs or stop their activity updates. An email arriving after a tab becomes idle is therefore possible.

## Manage the preference

1. Open account settings.
2. Select **Notifications**.
3. Find the direct-message email preference and enable or disable it.
4. Save and confirm the setting remains selected.

## Email contents and secure links

A regular reminder identifies the sender and conversation. An eligible visitor-to-owner reminder can also identify the originating Biolink and include its URL. This context does not turn the message into a public post.

**Open conversation** leads to the main Biqli app. If signed out, complete sign-in and any required two-factor verification; the supported return flow opens the intended conversation. The link does not log you in or authorize another account to read the thread.

Moderation, legal and security notices are separate from optional unread-message reminders. Disabling this preference does not necessarily disable those service notices.
