# Choose an apex domain or subdomain

> Select the safest domain structure for branded links.

A subdomain such as `go.example.com` is usually the simplest choice because it can be dedicated to Biqli without changing your main website. A root domain such as `example.com` can also be used when your DNS provider supports the record Biqli requests.

Choose a hostname that visitors will recognize and that is not already serving another application. The exact DNS record depends on the hostname, so always copy the name and value shown by Biqli instead of guessing them.

You must control the domain's DNS and it must be available inside Biqli.

## Root domain or subdomain

| Choice | Example | Considerations |
| ----------- | ---------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Root domain | `example.com` | Dedicates the main hostname to Biqli and can conflict with an existing website |
| Subdomain | `go.example.com` | Keeps the main website separate and is usually easier to dedicate to links |

Use a subdomain when `example.com` already hosts your company website, store, or
email-related web service. Choose a short word that clearly belongs to your
brand, such as `go`, `link`, or `visit`.

## Before connecting

Confirm which provider controls authoritative DNS, whether the hostname already
has records, and who can approve changes. Remove or migrate another service only
after you understand what currently depends on it.

The hostname should be stable. Changing it later changes every public URL that
uses it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use a domain already serving my website?

Use a dedicated subdomain unless you intentionally plan to replace the root
website behavior.

### Can I connect a path such as `example.com/go`?

No. Connect a hostname. Aliases become paths after the domain is active.

### Who should make DNS changes?

An authorized administrator at the provider controlling the domain's
nameservers.
