# Custom aliases and branded domains

> Choose the domain and path used by a short link.

The short URL combines a domain and an alias. For example, in
`go.example.com/summer`, `go.example.com` is the domain and `summer` is the
alias.

## Choose a domain

Use `biq.li` when you do not need a branded hostname. To use your own domain,
connect and verify it under **Custom domains** before selecting it in the link
builder.

## Choose an alias

Enter a short, readable alias when the public path matters. If you leave it
empty, Biqli generates one. An alias must be available on the selected domain,
so the same path cannot be assigned twice on that domain.

Changing the domain or alias changes the public short URL. Update websites,
campaigns, and printed material that use the previous URL.

<Tip>
  Keep aliases easy to read and type. Avoid dates or campaign details that will
  make an evergreen link feel outdated.
</Tip>

## Plan an alias

Prefer a meaningful path such as `/pricing` or `/summer-offer` over an internal
campaign number. Aliases are case and character constrained by the form, and
must be unique on the selected domain. Biqli validates the final combination,
not the alias in isolation.

## Use a custom domain

The custom domain must be attached to the workspace and active before it can be
used reliably. Pending DNS or SSL provisioning means the hostname is not ready
for a public campaign. If the same verified domain is attached to another
eligible workspace, resource access still follows the selected workspace.

## Change an existing URL safely

Changing a domain or alias creates a different public short URL for that link.
The destination and link ID remain part of the edited record, but old printed
or shared URLs should not be assumed to forward to the new path. Inventory
websites, ads, profiles, messages, and QR codes before changing it.
